The last year has seen a tremendous increase in the amount of identity theft by a technique known as Phishing. Phishing is an Internet based scam where people develop an email campaign or an Internet website that impersonates a legitimate organization. Via the email or the website, they solicit personal and/or financial information from you. This can include Social Security Numbers, account numbers, passwords or PIN`s and of course credit/debit card information. The email/website usually implies that there has been a problem or that you are going to lose access to a service if you do not immediately provide the information they are seeking. Other times there is a positive reward if you reply immediately. If you reply to one of these Phishing attempts you could risk serious financial problems. You should never respond to any inquiry asking for this type of information unless you can validate who is asking.

Please be advised, Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union will never contact you via email asking for such information. If you receive a suspicious email, please contact us immediately. If you receive a phone call and are not sure it is from the credit union, please ask the person their name and tell them you will call them back at our regular number. Do not click or ever look at the connecting links. Contact your CU immediatly if you get one of these emails.

You have probably heard horror stories about identity theft victims who discover that someone has opened loans or credit cards in their name, running up huge bills. If you think this crime couldn’t happen to you, think again. Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the country. The effects are devastating; it can take months to clear up your damaged credit history, and in the meantime it may be impossible to get a loan, to rent an apartment or even to write a check. How can you protect yourself? There are some simple steps you can take to help prevent identity theft:

bullet

Do not give out personal information, such as account or credit card numbers, over the phone or the Internet unless you have initiated the contact.

bullet

Report lost or stolen checks immediately.

bullet

Destroy unused credit card offers. A shredder can be a valuable investment!

bullet

Guard your ATM number, and treat your receipts with care.

bullet

Make sure your mailbox is secure, and promptly remove mail when it has been delivered.

bullet

Contact the major credit reporting companies at least annually to review your file. A copy of your credit report is available for a small fee*. The three major credit bureaus are:
