“Personal Finance Big Hit with VBCPS”

 Virginia Beach, Virginia – “I even learned something!” stated Karen Simmons, Work and Family studies teacher at Ocean Lakes High School where she is teaching students about savings, credit cards, and loans. And thanks to a local Credit Union, her students can learn about personal finance from the source.

 Teaching kids about personal finance is a hot topic in today’s schools. It is not part of the Virginia SOL (Standard of Learning) curriculum, but a necessary life skill. Many educators recognize their students’ lack of knowledge when it comes to personal finance so they are taking it into their own hands, and sometimes pockets, to find ‘Teacher Friendly” resources.

 “Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union is here to answer their call”, states Amy Wisilosky, VBSFCU Director of Marketing.  “We serve as guest speakers, offering free lesson plans, and providing tours of our facilities.”

 As of March 2004, Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union is proud to announce they provide free personal finance material to each Virginia Beach City Public School high school.  At least one teacher in each high school utilizes the materials developed by Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union; and/or the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program.

 To date, they have reached over 1400 VBCPS students in over 14 schools in the 2003-2004 academic year. They also serve as a “Community Partner” for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
