EMV Cards

EMV cards contain an embedded computer chip and are already in use in much of the rest of the world. Now they’re becoming the standard in the U.S.

Information programmed into your chip card will be personalized for your account and every in-person transaction is unique, adding a strong additional safeguard against fraud.

Enhanced Security For Your Debit And Credit Cards

1. Start the payment process by swiping your card, just as you do today. If the terminal is chip-enabled, you’ll be prompted to insert your card. Insert your card, face up and chip end into the chip-enabled terminal.

2. Leave the card in the terminal during the entire transaction.

3. Follow the instructions on the screen and either sign your name or enter your PIN as needed. Be sure to remove your card and take your receipt when the transaction is complete.

Chip Cards Are Easy To Use

When used at a chip-enabled terminal at the point of sale or an ATM, a small computer chip embedded in the card adds a new layer of protection against unauthorized use and counterfeiting. Information programmed into the chip is personalized for your account and each transaction generates a unique code that can’t be used again.

If a merchant isn’t using a chip-enabled terminal yet … you will ‘swipe’ your card to make your purchase, just as you do today. Chip cards will continue to have the magnetic stripe on the back, allowing them to work in regular terminals.

Making purchases online or by phone doesn’t change … just provide your card information as you have done in the past.

At an ATM

Insert your card into the terminal and follow the instructions on the screen.

Depending on the type of ATM, you might be prompted to reinsert your card. Leave the card in the  ATM until the transaction is complete and the card is released, and then remove your card.

A PIN is needed for ATM transactions.


Fraud Alert

There are high numbers of fraud charges occurring on debit/credit cards around the area.  To help protect yourself, it is important to understand how your information can get into the wrong hands.

Aside from merchant data breaches, ATM skimming is another way your information can be stolen.

Remember, this is not limited to only ATMs but any device that has a card swipe feature (typically unattended machines, such as gas stations).

What If You Lose Your Debit Card?

Lost, stolen or victim of Fraud

It’s Saturday night, and you lose your debit card! What do you do? Log into your mobile app and “Disable” your card! If you find it, GREAT! Just log back into the mobile app and “Activate” it!

What if you can’t find it?

Change the status to “Lost” or “Stolen” and your card will immediately be closed. Call us during business hours to order a new card.  There is a $10 charge for the new card – so make sure you truly can’t find it before you select “Lost” or “Stolen”. How does it work?

  1. Log into home banking
  2. Tap on  “Remote Control Cards”
  3. Tap on the correct active & open card
    Make sure if a husband/wife account they select the correct card.
  4. Change your status to Active, Disabled, Lost or Stolen.  Hit “Save”

Debit Card Spending Limits: Point of Sale

There is a $3,500 daily point of sale (POS) limit on debit cards. If you have the funds available in your account(s), you may use your card at a merchant(s) and spend up to $3,500 of your funds per day. What does this mean to you?

Scenario: If you purchase a $3,500 TV with your debit card, and THEN try to purchase $200 at a grocery store your card would be declined because it exceeds the $3,500 (POS) daily limit.|

NOTE:  ATM withdrawal limits are NOT part of the POS daily limits.  You may still withdraw up to  $500 per 24 hours.

Online Shopping: If you are shopping online, there is a $1,000 daily limit on all purchases. If you wish to request a temporary limit increase for any of the above scenarios please contact us by calling 757-463-3650 x320. This limit will protect your funds in the event your card is compromised and your funds are illegally accessed.


International Travel

Traveling is so exciting and we are thrilled you are exploring the world!  Before traveling it is important to have a plan when it comes to spending money abroad.  Due to high activities of fraud, many countries are blocked from authorizing purchases on your VBSFCU Visa debit card.

Whether you are using a VBSFCU debit/credit card or not, it’s always a good idea to see if there are any country restrictions on the card you plan to use.  Using a VBSFCU debit card? Please call us prior to your expected travel dates 757-463-3650 option 6.

International Visa Debit Card Fee: VISA charges a 1% fee on all international transactions. If you travel internationally and use your VBSFCU VISA debit card, you will notice the fee on your monthly statement. This fee may be included in your transaction amount.
